What I Learned Hunting for Mushrooms

WHAT I LEARNED is an idea inspired by my grandmother, Laura Gladys Ellard Sievers. Gram grew up on an East Texas cotton farm in a small town you could spit across if your mouth weren’t dry as dust. She broke free of that life and when she moved to Minnesota, had to learn Yankee ways and to speak Minnesotan with a southern drawl. All her friends called her Tex. Gram once told me, “You’ve got a shot at learning something every day.” Don’t blow it went unspoken but her meaning was clear.
